Monument in Francehttp://www.feelystone.com/news-blog/connaught-rangers-memorial/ http://www.feelystone.com/news-blog/connaught-rangers-memorial/#comments Fri, 21 Oct 2011 15:49:11 +0000 feelystone http://www.feelystone.com/?p=1985 Recently Feelystone Boyle erected a Memorial over 11 British Soldiers in the Village of Iron, Guise (North East France). Five of the Soldiers were members of the Connaught Rangers, from various parts of Ireland.
The Soldiers were trapped behind the lines in the retreat from Mons to the Marne in the summer of 1914. They were sheltered by the villagers of Iron for many months but eventually betrayed, captured and executed with their host, who sheltered them. Part of the Village was burnt in reprisal.
Barry Feely met the Memorial organiser, Hedley Malloch, at a Remembrance Day in King House Boyle (Former Barracks of Connaught Rangers) last autumn, where he gave a talk on the incident and his intentions to erect a Memorial.
The picture shows the memorial of Wicklow Granite in situ with Barry & Shane Feely, who carried out the erection. Seamus Connolly from Clare sculpted the bronze plaque. Seamus also sculpted the Dermot Earley bronze Figure, which Feelystone Boyle erected in Gorthaganny.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by twenty members of the Connaught Rangers Association, which included a number of members from Boyle. The Association also made a contribution to the Memorial fund.

July 2011 Art@Workhttp://www.feelystone.com/news-blog/july-2011-artwork/ http://www.feelystone.com/news-blog/july-2011-artwork/#comments Mon, 08 Aug 2011 08:20:14 +0000 feelystone http://www.feelystone.com/?p=1821 Visual artist Marie Brett is working with Feelystone, as a recipient of the 2011 Roscommon County Council arts@work programme.

It’s the companies work of making memorials for children, adults and pets that the artist will focus on to inform and influence her own work, which too focuses on the issue of ‘loss’ and the making of objects which are symbolically marking a past presence.

Marie uses photography, video, sound and sculptural installation in her work.

Details of Marie’s past artworks :

‘Lost Children’ created in response to the historical and social landscape of a hospital site with Magdalene laundry. Staff, patients and visitors shared memories of children loved and lost, but not forgotten. The work was selected for ‘Vital Signs’ Arts & Health in context exhibition organised by The Arts Council/Create 2009.

‘Amulet’ was a research project exploring the potential of creating memorial objects as amulets for bereaved parents. Located at Cork University Maternity Hospital, in partnership with Bereavement & Loss Midwives plus Ballyphehane/Togher art/Craft Initiative plus Jennie Butler UCC  Department of Folklore and Ethnology. The work was supported by The Arts Council through Creates AIC R&D Scheme and the HSE South. (on-going)

‘Memory Dress’ explored dress as a cultural symbol marking personal milestones and commemorating lives lived. The project was supported by The Arts Council via Creates  AIC Scheme, Triskel Arts Centre, Cork City Council and The HSE South. Located at St Finbarr’s Hospital, Cork, in collaboration with hospital artist Charlotte Donovan.
